Key note speakers included The Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras, Minister for Energy & Resources, Victoria; Michael J Edmonds, Vice President Strategic Solutions, S&C Electric Company; Prof. Tim Flannery; and Ramy Soussou, Deputy CEO, Energy Retailers Association of Australia.

Speakers noted that Australia has a reliable and cost effective electricity market but urged State Governments to recognise that policy failures and poor regulation have led to higher network charges, which account for electricity price rises.

Minister Kotsiras commented that no other State is considering a Distributor mandated rollout of smart meters. Not surprising given that the Victorian Distributors have collected around $650 from every household in the State to date and continue to collect 10% from every residential electricity bill, for this initiative alone, with no discernible benefits yet accrued or passed through to consumers.

The summit provided a valuable opportunity to meet with industry representatives and suppliers from around the country to discuss energy market trends, emerging technologies and regulatory changes.
